The Big Question

Why do bad things happen to good people? How do people define/experience misfortune? How does it influence the sense of themselves?

  1. You might start with the book by the same name (authored by Harold Kushner). There is also a body of research literature on the topic of resiliency-- begin by looking for university research studies. One potential hurdle: you'll need to define "bad" things and "good" people in order to make meaningful comparisons and generalizations.

  2. That is a very good question Ari. I think it depends on how you look at the different things that has happened to people. One person might think that it is a "bad" thing and another person might think of it as a "good" thing.

  3. Oh a toughie. This could be influnenced by a number of factors. I guess the first question I would ask is, what defines a "good" or "bad" person? Is there a line that you can't cross? Is there a number of mistakes you can make before turning "bad"? This should turn out to be a great research question!

  4. Great question.... In my opinion, when misfortune occurs in a "good" persons life, it is a test. A test of how good the person really is, and that is discovered by their reaction to this misfortune. Good people will overcome the conflict and find light somehow and grow from the situation. And those who we thought were good people but are really bad people, will show their true colors and blame the world for tHeir misfortune...
